Nutella & Strawberry French Toast Stacks

Okay, I know these Nutella and strawberry-loaded French toast stacks look fancy, but I promise they are very easy to make! Clearly, this recipe is aimed at a Valentine’s Day Brunch since the big day is this Sunday, so grab yourself some bread, eggs, milk, strawberries, Nutella, chocolate syrup, and a heart-shaped cookie cutter and let’s get to work!

Nutella & Strawberry French Toast Stacks

Now, I told you this wasn’t a hard recipe, and I wasn’t lying! I would say the only “hard” part is cutting your bread slices into heart shapes. I highly recommend using a heart-shaped cookie cutter for this, or you can skip this step entirely (it doesn’t change the taste, ha).

Next, we dunk the bread into a very standard French toast batter (eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, flour, baking powder, salt, etc), then fry them up! Next steps are the fun ones… smother the top of the French toast heart with Nutella and strawberry slices, then continue until you have a stack of three! Finish the stacks off with a drizzle of chocolate syrup and some powdered sugar, and voila! Fancy brunch that really isn’t that fancy

How to make Nutella & Strawberry French Toast Stacks?

Step 1:

Cut your sourdough slices into heart shapes using a heart-shaped cookie cutter or a knife/scissors (or skip altogether if you aren’t feeling that festive or motivated, ha).

Step 2:

Whisk together milk, eggs, and vanilla in a shallow medium bowl until smooth. Next, whisk in the sugar, flour, baking powder, and salt until well combined and no lumps remain.

Step 3:

Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray, then heat over medium-low heat. Once the skillet is hot, dunk one bread slice in the batter from step two, ensuring it’s completely covered in the mixture, then place it in the hot pan. Continue for all bread slices, then fry them for about 2 minutes on one side, then flip and fry for another 1-2 minutes on the second side, or until golden.

Step 4:

Add one French toast heart to a plate. Using a butter knife, spread Nutella over the top like you’re frosting a cake, then top the Nutella with 2-4 sliced strawberries. Then add the second piece of French toast and continue the process until you have a stack of three heart-shaped French toasts ending with a spread of Nutella and sliced strawberries on top. Repeat this process with the second half of the French toast.

Step 5:

Top stacks with a drizzle of chocolate syrup and a sprinkle of powdered sugar, then devour!

WHAT TO EAT WITH THIS (Nutella & Strawberry French Toast Stacks)?

Nutella & Strawberry French Toast Stacks have become our weekend snack. I’ve made them with strawberries, raspberries, and even a mix of berries when that’s all I had, and every time, they’re always a hit.

One morning, I swapped the cream cheese for mascarpone, and oh wow… it felt more yummy! I typically serve it with something spicy for dinner, such as my favorite Taco Pasta Skillet.

We finish with maple sausage, hash brown egg cups, and sometimes my husband’s favorite drink, the Orange Julius Smoothie, which never fails to make my two kids smile.
